THERAPEUTIC ADVANCES IN THE MANAGEMENT OF MALIGNANT ONCOLOGICAL WOUNDS: SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE ON TECHNOLOGIES, SYMPTOM CONTROL, AND QUALITY OF LIFE

Abstract

Malignant oncological wounds constitute a complex complication of advanced cancer, characterized by manifestations such as pain, odor, exudate, bleeding, and necrosis, with physical, emotional, and social repercussions. This study aimed to analyze the scientific evidence on therapeutic advances used in the management of these lesions, with emphasis on technologies, symptom control, interventions aimed at tumor control, and quality of life. This is an integrative literature review with a qualitative, exploratory-descriptive approach, conducted in August 2026 using the SciELO, PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and CAPES Periodicals Portal databases. A total of 286 studies were identified, of which 14 ultimately met the eligibility criteria and comprised the final sample. Four main thematic axes were identified: control of pain, odor, exudate, and bleeding; use of therapeutic technologies and materials; interventions for tumor control, including radiotherapy in specific situations; and strategies focused on quality of life and palliative care. In addition, the findings reinforce the need for further research on emerging technologies and specific protocols to improve the quality of care. In summary, the management of malignant oncological wounds requires an individualized and multidisciplinary approach, prioritizing symptom control, comfort, autonomy, and patient dignity.
