Abstract

This study addresses the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in perimenopausal women, considering the physiological and hormonal changes characteristic of this phase. The climacteric corresponds to the transition period between the reproductive and non-reproductive phases, while menopause represents a specific event, marked by the permanent cessation of menstruation. These changes can cause physical, emotional and metabolic alterations, including the onset of musculoskeletal pain, with a possible impact on women's quality of life. To investigate the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in perimenopausal women in the city of Piancó, Paraíba. This is a descriptive and exploratory field study with a  qualitative-quantitative approach, which was conducted online through the Google Forms platform, with 35 perimenopausal women residing in the city of Piancó, Paraíba. The data were analyzed and tabulated with the aid of Microsoft Excel software. The study included 35 women. There was a higher frequency in the 40-45 age group (40%) and among women who were already menopausal (66%). A high prevalence of musculoskeletal pain was observed (89%), predominantly of mild intensity (49%), followed by moderate (37%) and intense (14%). The most affected body segments were the knee (54%) and the spine (46%). Regarding therapeutic management, 66% of the participants reported not undergoing physical therapy treatment. The study identified a high prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in perimenopausal women, mainly in the knees and spine, related to hormonal changes and reduced estrogen levels. Despite this, there was low demand for physical therapy, highlighting the importance of this intervention in controlling pain, functionality and quality of life.
