Abstract

Sarcopenia is an age-related condition characterized by impairments in muscle strength, muscle mass, and physical performance, potentially affecting functional capacity and independence in older adults. This study is an integrative literature review aimed at analyzing the influence of resistance training on the management and control of sarcopenia in men and women aged 60 years or older, considering its effects on muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance. Searches were conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, the Virtual Health Library, and SciELO databases, applying previously established eligibility criteria. After the identification, screening, and full-text assessment stages, 15 studies were included in the final synthesis. The results showed more consistent improvements in muscle strength, physical performance, and functional capacity. Regarding muscle mass, the findings were more heterogeneous, with benefits observed in some interventions and no significant changes in others. It is concluded that resistance training has a favorable influence on the management and control of sarcopenia, particularly through improvements in strength and functional capacity, making it a relevant strategy for older adults with sarcopenia or related conditions.
