Abstract

Rare diseases in the neonatal period represent an important challenge for healthcare, particularly due to the diversity of clinical manifestations, the low individual prevalence of these conditions, and the need for early recognition to reduce morbidity and mortality. This study analyzes the main challenges related to the early diagnosis of rare diseases in newborns and discusses the importance of multiprofessional care for comprehensive healthcare. This is a qualitative and descriptive literature review based on the analysis of scientific publications and documents addressing neonatal screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of rare diseases. The analyzed literature indicates that nonspecific clinical manifestations, limited access to specialized tests, the need for genetic and metabolic testing, and inequalities in the availability of specialized services may delay diagnostic confirmation. The findings also demonstrate that expanded neonatal screening, combined with careful clinical assessment and advances in genetics and precision medicine, contributes to identifying certain conditions at earlier stages. It is concluded that collaboration among neonatology, genetics, nursing, and other healthcare fields contributes to timely diagnosis, definition of therapeutic interventions, continuous follow-up, and family guidance, strengthening comprehensive and high-quality neonatal care.
