Abstract

This literature review, serving as a final course project, focused on the application of techniques used for root coverage in cases of gingival recession within the field of periodontics. Gingival recession involves the apical displacement of the gingival margin in relation to the cemento-enamel junction, resulting in the exposure of the root surface. This condition can lead to dentin hypersensitivity, aesthetic concerns, and an increased susceptibility to non-carious cervical lesions. This study gathered scientific evidence on various surgical procedures and discussed root coverage treatments, summarizing their indications, advantages, limitations, and clinical success. The analysis covered the aesthetic and functional evaluation of existing techniques—such as the subepithelial connective tissue graft combined with a coronally advanced flap—as well as more modern, minimally invasive approaches, like the tunnel technique. The methodology was based on a review of scientific articles from established databases, including PubMed, SciELO, and Google Scholar, prioritizing original and recent publications to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date perspective on the subject. The analysis examined the efficacy of these techniques regarding root coverage, gain in keratinized tissue, long-term stability of results, and postoperative morbidity. This work is significant for organizing essential information to support clinical decision-making; it enhances awareness of various therapeutic options and assists in selecting the most appropriate technique for specific clinical scenarios. The review addressed both functional and aesthetic outcomes in the treatment of gingival recession.
