Orofacial Harmonization encompasses different procedures aimed at improving the aesthetic and functional aspects of the face; however, the quantity, quality, and duration of the available scientific evidence vary among the modalities used. This study aimed to critically evaluate the robustness of the evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of the procedures selected for this review, with emphasis on medium- and long-term effects and the possible repercussions of repeated treatments. An integrative literature review was conducted, with searches performed mainly in the PubMed/MEDLINE database and consultation of official sources for regulatory and normative information. Evidence related to botulinum toxin type A, hyaluronic acid fillers, poly-L-lactic acid, calcium hydroxyapatite, fractional 1927 nm thulium laser, and microfocused ultrasound was analyzed.
Overall, the evaluated procedures show favorable efficacy outcomes and adequate safety profiles during the periods most frequently studied. However, the robustness of the evidence tends to decrease when the analysis focuses on prolonged follow-up, repeated treatments, and possible cumulative or delayed effects. In some modalities, the evidence is also limited by the heterogeneity of protocols and assessment methods used across studies. It is concluded that Orofacial Harmonization includes procedures supported by relevant scientific evidence, particularly in the short term, but important gaps remain regarding longitudinal evaluation and safety after repeated exposures over the years.
