BETWEEN THE REAL AND THE MYTHICAL: GAUCHO TALES AND LEGENDS IN THE FORMATION OF RIO GRANDE DO SUL IDENTITY

Abstract

This study analyzes the contribution of gaucho tales and legends to the formation of Rio Grande do Sul’s cultural identity, highlighting the relationship between historical and mythical elements present in these narratives. It is based on the understanding of cultural identity as a dynamic social construction, shaped through collective memory, cultural practices, and oral tradition. In the context of Rio Grande do Sul, these popular narratives play a fundamental role in preserving values, customs, and symbols that strengthen regional belonging and the appreciation of the cultural roots of the gaucho people. Traditional legends such as the Negrinho do Pastoreio, Salamanca do Jarau, and Boitatá are discussed, emphasizing their symbolic, moral, and educational dimensions. The study also highlights the importance of regionalist literature in consolidating these narratives and in building the gaucho imaginary, which connects reality and fantasy. Methodologically, this is a qualitative bibliographic research based on theoretical works on culture, identity, and folklore. It concludes that gaucho tales and legends are essential for the formation of Rio Grande do Sul’s identity, as they preserve cultural memory and reframe historical experiences through the popular imagination.
