The diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has historically focused on childhood, leaving a gap in the identification of adults who mimic behaviors to fit into society. This article aims to analyze the clinical and psychosocial implications arising from the late diagnosis of autism in adults. The methodology adopted consists of a qualitative and descriptive literature review, based on indexed scientific articles and the guidelines of the DSM-5-TR. The results show that the lack of early identification exposes individuals to the exhausting phenomenon of social masking and severe clinical misdiagnoses, commonly mistaken for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Bipolar Disorder, and Borderline Personality Disorder. It is concluded that obtaining a diagnosis in adulthood, although late, acts as a tool for identity validation and psychological relief, mitigating a lifetime history of social inadequacy, ceasing inappropriate drug treatments, and guiding correct therapeutic supports.
